Poetry: 'Catechism of a Cock Killer'

Written by Ella Walsworth-Bell

How did you do it?

Mute strength and a broom handle

How did you do it?

Rag over the face covering eyes

How did you do it?

If bird is small enough, scissors snip through neck

How did you do it?

Practised. Same as learning piano, riding a bike, using condoms

How did you do it?

          With disgust, compassion, regret

How did you do it?

Well, weren’t ever going to be eggs, were there?

How did you do it?

Weighed feathered warmth in palms; reasoned sage, honey, juices

How did you do it?

          In gasped half-darkness, kids asleep

How did you do it?

Try not to name them (Lucky, Kelloggs, Lady Gaga, Donald)

How did you do it?

Gifted time, night after night after night until fridge was bare
